
Fixing Those Annoying Heat Spots in KHS Blow Molders
If you’ve spent any real time running KHS blow molding lines, you know the headache. You look at your bottles and there it is: thin walls in one spot, or that cloudy, pearlescent look in another. It’s almost always a heat distribution problem. The thermal field is just… off. We’ve spent a lot of time figuring this out, which is why we built a line of quartz heating lamps that you can just slide right into your KHS system. No fuss. We focused everything on the specific infrared wavelength that PET resin actually likes.
The grit behind the glow
Here is the thing about heat: it isn’t just about cranking up the wattage. If the filament inside the lamp is off-center by even a single millimeter, you get hot spots. Simple as that. We keep the tolerances incredibly tight on the filament positioning and dial in the quartz thickness and halogen pressure. The result? The heat actually spreads evenly across the whole tube instead of bunching up. Now, we all want faster cycle times, which means we need high heat density. But there’s a catch. If you push too much power into a short tube, the filament burns out. To stop that from happening, we use high-purity quartz. It can take a beating from constant heating and cooling without cracking under the pressure.
Getting them in the machine
We made these for quick swaps. They use standard connectors, so they fit your existing wiring perfectly. You won’t have to spend your afternoon rewiring the oven. We also tweaked the halogen cycle to shift the radiation to a peak that PET absorbs most effectively. It’s a subtle change, but it makes a huge difference in how the plastic reacts. One quick tip, though. If you decide to move to a higher wattage lamp to speed things up, keep an eye on your cooling fans. More power means more ambient heat. If your airflow can’t keep up and the oven gets too hot, it doesn’t matter how uniform your lamps are—you’ll lose control of the preform temperature anyway. Just double-check your fans, pop the lamps in, and you should be good to go.
