
How to pick the right infrared wattage for your bathroom
Getting your bathroom temperature just right isn’t about guessing. It comes down to how much space you’re actually trying to heat and how high your ceilings are. If you just toss a massive, high-wattage lamp into a tiny shower stall, you’re asking for trouble. You’ll either overheat the space or just waste a ton of electricity. We usually look at the floor area and how much of a temperature jump you’re looking for to get the math right.
Picking your wattage
For those smaller bathrooms—anything under 4m²—a shortwave lamp between 250W and 400W is usually plenty. The best part? It’s instant. You don’t have to stand around waiting for the air to warm up. The heat hits your skin the second you flip the switch. If you’ve got a big master bath (somewhere between 6m² and 10m²), you’ll probably need a few different units or one heavy-hitter in the 600W+ range. But be careful. If you go too big in a small room, you might trip your breakers or end up with “hot spots” that feel aggressive rather than cozy. On the flip side, if you go too small, the heater never gets a break. That wears out the filament faster and makes your electric bill jump.
The trade-offs
Shortwave lamps are amazing for a quick morning routine because they’re so fast. But that intensity is a double-edged sword. High-wattage lamps throw a very concentrated beam of heat. If you mount them too low, it’s going to feel like you’re standing under a heat lamp at a buffet. To let that heat spread out into a nice, comfortable cone, we suggest keeping at least 2.2 meters of clearance from the floor to the ceiling.
Wiring it all together
When you’re hooking these up, just make sure your wiring can handle the peak load. Most of these use standard R7s connectors, so swapping them out later is a breeze. One big tip:**Use high-temperature wiring.**Don’t use standard PVC insulation near the lamp housing, or it’ll melt. Also, keep an eye on your voltage. If the voltage drops, you’ll notice some lamps heating up more than others on the same circuit. Stick to the rated wattage for your room size, and the whole system will run a lot smoother.
