If you’ve spent any time around KHS blow molding machines, you know the headache. You get these weird wall thickness variations or bottles that just look… off. Most engineers spend hours obsessing over the oven settings, trying to tweak the dials to make it work. But here’s the thing: the problem usually isn’t the settings. It’s the quartz lamps themselves. They have these inconsistent thermal profiles—basically, hot and cold spots that mess up your preforms. Why your heat is uneven
Standard tubes have this annoying “end-effect.” The heat just drops off a cliff as you get closer to the electrodes. It’s frustrating because you’re fighting the hardware. We fixed this by getting obsessive about the filament winding and the purity of the quartz. By tightening the tolerances on where that filament actually sits, the infrared radiation stays steady from one end of the tube to the other. The best part? You can stop babysitting the oven settings every time you start a new run.
The gear under the hood
We use high-purity fused quartz because it doesn’t crystallize when things get scorching hot. We also added special coatings to shift the emission spectrum. In plain English: the PET preform sucks up the energy faster. And because we know these machines vibrate like crazy, we used connectors built for high-cycle environments. A quick heads-up on the setup
You can pop these right into your KHS setup without messing with your wiring. It’s a simple swap. But, there is one trade-off. Because the heat distribution is so much tighter, your cooling fans have to work a bit harder. If you’re cranking the wattage to push out as many bottles as possible, just double-check that your exhaust system can actually move that extra heat out of the oven. If the air inside gets too stagnant, you might accidentally overheat the preform necks. We built these for the big plants—the ones running 100+ lamps where “pretty close” isn’t good enough.
