
Can a few new lamps actually speed up your old blow molding machine?
If you’re running an older PET machine, you know the frustration. You’re staring at the clock, wishing you could squeeze a few more bottles per hour out of the line, but the machine just isn’t hitting those target cycle times. Most people assume the only way out is to drop a huge amount of cash on a brand-new machine. But honestly? Usually, the problem is just the oven. It’s not heating the preforms fast enough. Replacing those tired, old lamps with updated IR elements can completely change how heat hits the plastic, which means you can speed things up without buying a whole new rig. Let’s talk about heat density. To push more preforms through the oven, you need more “punch” from your heat. We design our lamps with specific wattage and voltage ratios so the quartz tube hits operating temperature almost instantly. But here is the catch: if you jump to a higher-wattage lamp to shave seconds off your cycle, you’ve got to check your power supply. A 2500W tube puts out a massive amount of heat, but if your wiring isn’t up to the task, you’re just going to fry your contacts. It’s not worth the risk. The gear inside the glass. We use heavy-wall quartz glass because it doesn’t sag when things get hot. For PET, we stick with shortwave IR because it sinks into the plastic quickly. We also have coated options. These are great because they reflect the heat forward instead of letting it bleed backward. It keeps the energy focused on the body of the bottle and keeps the neck cool—which is exactly where you want it. Plus, we use standard R7s or Sk15 connectors. You just pop them in. No need to rip out the wiring in your oven rack. The trade-off. Now, you don’t get extra speed for free. When you crank up the heat density to boost production, the inside of the oven gets a lot hotter. You’ll probably need to tweak your cooling fans or bump up the airflow. If you don’t, the preforms can overheat and start “pearling.” It’s a balancing act. You have to make sure your cooling system can actually keep up with the extra heat those new lamps are pumping out, or you’ll end up with deformed bottles.
